What Is SMT?
Smart Money Technique compares a correlated asset to your target to detect when institutions are positioning against the apparent move.
The core idea
SMT (Smart Money Technique) is a form of divergence analysis. You compare two assets that normally move together — for example, EURUSD and GBPUSD, or ES and NQ — and watch for moments when one makes a new high or low while the other does not.
When EURUSD makes a new high but GBPUSD fails to make a new high, that's an SMT divergence. It suggests that despite EURUSD's apparent strength, smart money is not committed to the move across the board — a reversal may be near.
Why SMT works
Institutions operate across baskets of correlated instruments, not single pairs. When they are truly accumulating or distributing, the correlated assets move together. A divergence means one leg is being used to offload or accumulate while the other is held back — a tell that the apparent move is a liquidity operation, not a genuine trend.
SMT gives you a window into intent that price alone cannot show. It is one of the few tools that can warn you a sweep is happening in real time.
Choosing your pair
Pick instruments with a strong historical correlation. In forex: EURUSD/GBPUSD, EURUSD/AUDUSD (for risk sentiment). In indices: ES/NQ, ES/DXY (inverse). The correlation must be reliable — a weak correlation produces false SMT signals.
Always confirm the correlation on the timeframe you trade. What correlates on the daily may not correlate on the 5-minute.
The twin pair that stopped agreeing
EURUSD and GBPUSD almost always move together. EURUSD drives to a new high above 1.1090 during the London session.
- 1Before celebrating the breakout, check the correlated partner: GBPUSD is rallying too — but it stalls short of its own corresponding high.
- 2EURUSD made a new high; GBPUSD did not. That's a bearish SMT divergence.
- 3Read the intent: the 'strength' in EURUSD isn't broad institutional buying — one leg is being used to offload while the other holds back.
- 4Expect EURUSD's new high to be a sweep of buy-side liquidity, and start preparing for a short — pending confirmation.
Price alone says 'strength'. The correlated pair tells you whether anyone with size actually believes it.
