Reading SMT Divergences
Learn the bullish and bearish SMT patterns and how to combine them with liquidity sweeps for high-conviction reversals.
Bearish SMT divergence
A bearish SMT forms when your target asset makes a new high (sweeping buy-side liquidity) but its correlated partner fails to make a new high. Example: EURUSD prints a new high above an old high, but GBPUSD does not make a corresponding new high. The lack of confirmation suggests EURUSD's high is a sweep, not a genuine breakout — a short opportunity may be forming.
Bullish SMT divergence
A bullish SMT forms when your target makes a new low (sweeping sell-side liquidity) but the correlated partner holds above its own corresponding low. Example: ES makes a new low but NQ holds its low — institutions are supporting the broader market even as ES sweeps stops. A long opportunity may be forming.
Combining SMT with structure
SMT is strongest as confirmation, not a standalone signal. The high-probability sequence: identify a liquidity pool on your target → watch for a sweep → confirm with SMT divergence on the correlated asset → wait for a CHoCH and a return to an order block on a lower timeframe → enter.
This stack — liquidity + sweep + SMT + CHoCH + order block — is the heart of an institutional-style entry. SMT is the layer that tells you the sweep is real, not a continuation.
Bullish SMT at the lows
Risk-off day: ES sells off hard and sweeps the previous week's low at 4,460. Your bias says sell — but check the partner.
- 1Pull up NQ, ES's correlated partner. NQ also sold off — but it holds above its own corresponding weekly low.
- 2ES new low, NQ no new low: bullish SMT divergence. The sweep in ES looks like a stop hunt, not genuine distribution.
- 3Demand the full stack: 5M CHoCH to the upside on ES, then a return to the order block that initiated the reversal.
- 4Enter long at the block, stop below 4,460 (the sweep low), target the buy-side liquidity above. The divergence was the early tell; the structure confirmed it.
SMT at a swept low, followed by CHoCH and an order block — that stack is the highest-conviction reversal sequence you'll trade.
