BOS and CHoCH — The Language of Shifts
Break of Structure confirms a trend continues; Change of Character warns it may be reversing. Learn to read both.
Break of Structure (BOS)
A Break of Structure occurs when price breaks beyond a previous swing point in the direction of the prevailing trend. In an uptrend, price makes a new HH — that's a bullish BOS. In a downtrend, price makes a new LL — that's a bearish BOS.
A BOS is a confirmation signal: it tells you the trend is still intact and likely to continue. SMC traders use the BOS to validate that the current move has institutional backing, not just a retail-driven spike.
Change of Character (CHoCH)
A Change of Character is the first sign that a trend may be reversing. In an uptrend making HHs and HLs, the moment price fails to make a new HH and instead breaks the most recent HL, that break of the HL is a bearish CHoCH.
Conversely, in a downtrend, the first break of the most recent LH is a bullish CHoCH. A CHoCH is an early warning — it does not guarantee reversal, but it tells you the character of the move has shifted and you should be on alert.
BOS vs CHoCH in practice
Think of it this way: BOS says 'the story continues.' CHoCH says 'the story might be changing.' Many beginners confuse the two and enter on a CHoCH as if it were a confirmed reversal. The disciplined approach is to treat CHoCH as a signal to prepare, then wait for confirmation (a new structural move or a return to an order block) before committing.
On lower timeframes, CHoCHs happen frequently and can be noise. Always confirm against the higher timeframe structure — a CHoCH that aligns with a higher-timeframe liquidity sweep is far more meaningful.
Spotting a CHoCH before the crowd
EURUSD is in a clean 4H uptrend: HH at 1.1090, last HL at 1.1020. Then price stalls at 1.1085 — it never makes a new high.
- 1Notice the failure first: no new HH. The uptrend's rhythm has broken.
- 2Price then breaks below the most recent HL (1.1020). That break is a bearish CHoCH — the first structural warning.
- 3Do not short instantly. A CHoCH is an alert, not a confirmed reversal.
- 4Confirmation arrives when the 15M prints its own lower high and lower low structure, or price returns to re-test the breakdown level and rejects. Only then do you look for a short entry.
The trader who treats CHoCH as 'prepare' instead of 'enter' avoids the trap that catches most beginners.
